The station opened in 1884 serving the village of Hampton-in-Arden on the West Coast Mainline between Birmingham New Street and London Euston. It is the next station down the line after Birmingham International, served by two trains an hour in both directions. It replaced an earlier station of 1837 built for the London and Birmingham Railway.

There was an earlier Hampton-in-Arden Station around 470 metres to the north-west, that was opened in 1837 by the Londonand Birmingham Railway.

The current station dates to 1884, and was built by the London and North Western Railway.

Electrification took place by the 1960s, and the present ticket office dates to around then.

London Midland managed the station from 2007 until their franchise ended in 2017.

From the end of 2017 to present West Midlands Trains managed the station now, with their London Northwestern Railway trains stopping here on the line from Birmingham New Street to London Euston, although some West Midlands Railway trains might stop here for local services between Wolverhampton and Coventry.

While there is no footbridges here, there is access to the platforms from the bridge on the High Street. The bridge from Station Road is now just a footbridge with no ramps to the station.

The station has a car park, ticket office, ticket machine, step-free access and a taxi rank.

The platforms are long, so is space for 8 carriages or more (usually two Class 350's attached together). Other trains do not stop here.

From an October 2017 visit to Hampton-in-Arden, getting off London Midland 350 129, it was heading to London Euston, next stop Berkswell.

Less than an hour later, got London Midland 350 107 at Hampton-in-Arden, back to Birmingham New Street.

A Cross Country Class 220 Voyager passes Hampton-in-Arden without stopping, it's next stop would be Coventry. If you were on one of these, you wouldn't really see much of Hampton-in-Arden at speed.
