Packwood House - history

The house began as a timber framed farmhouse, being built between 1556 and 1560 for John Fetherston. The last member of the family died in 1876.

In 1904, a Birmingham born industrialist called Alfred Ash bought the house and the surrounding gardens. His son inherited the property in 1925, he was called Graham Baron Ash (Baron was his middle name and not a title). He spent the next two decades restoring the house into the Tudor style, and getting period furniture. As well as converting a barn into a Tudor-style hall, with a sprung floor for dancing. This was conected to the house by the Long Gallery. This was completed by 1931. Ash donated the estate to the National Trust in 1941, but continued to live here until 1947, when he moved to Wingfield Castle.

The house dates to the 16th century, while the outbuildings were built in the 17th century. There was entrance to the house from the West Front and East Front. The South Front door led to the gardens. There is also a door in the Great Hall.
